I am a figurative painter. I primarily work with the female figure because I continue to be interested in issues that pertain to women. The use of metaphor offers me a tool to deal with themes of self-esteem, control and dignity. Most recently I have been painting a series of women “dressed” in Napoleonic military attire as an outward symbol of power and identity. I combine elements of past and present “fashion” to create a sense of whimsy and irony.
I periodically revisit my sheep series where allegory and metaphor play a big part in the paintings.
My paintings are a mix of watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. There is no system to my method of painting as I use whatever works best. More than likely, I start a painting on a marked and painted surface. This provides surprising and refreshing discoveries in my art.
